Infiniti FX Review

Overview3 out of 5

The 37 is the 'sensible' version in the FX series. Unlike the 50, which has a 5.0-litre V8 under the bonnet, this uses the 3.7-litre lump that is used in the rest of the Infiniti range.

In Europe the 37 is expected to make up 80% FX sales and although its fuel consumption is less horrific than the 50, you can still call it a 'gas-guzzler'.

So who will buy this £42,000 SUV and what's it up against? Infiniti is targeting the classic Chelsea tractor buyers: people who have a large amount of disposable income and are unfazed by the anti-4x4 brigade. Potential FX37 buyers are those who want style, a high driving position, plenty of kit, a good after-sales service and reliability. On the face of it this car targets these kinds of buyers very well, but there's plenty of quality in this class. The reality is, if Infiniti wants to make a real impact when it launches in Europe and the UK in 2009, it'll have to convince potential FX37 buyers that it is a better option than a Porsche Cayenne or a BMW X6.

It's going to be a tough road ahead then...
