Handling, functional appearance, reliability, punchy diesel engine
A bit plain to look at, low-rent interior
A good family purchase, though Toyota's RAV-4 range is more stylish and comes with a wider choice of variants

The ride is smooth and well-controlled for a 4x4, engine noise is well-contained and road noise is minimal. However, some of the interior plastics and fabrics look and feel a bit cheap, and the seats are somewhat flat and unsupportive, particularly under-thigh and laterally; over-averagely tall drivers could again find it difficult to get comfy.
Though the cabin dimensions have been enlarged a little, it's not quite as roomy in there as you'd think. Adult rear seat passengers are short on legroom, and particularly tall front seat occupants could also struggle to get comfortable. However, what the rear lacks in outright space, it makes up for in versatility, with the rear seats folding, reclining, sliding and tipping up altogether to allow for load-carrying and transportation of awkward objects, sports equipment and general family paraphernalia.
The standard stereo is a bit weedy, but a single-slot CD player does come as standard. A multi-CD stack system is optional, as is satellite navigation; an Alpine-supplied DVD player with rear screens and integrated Playstation2 will also be added to the accessories list.
