Category: Small Family
Price Range: £14,750 to £21,780
Roomy, good value, economical.
Brakes and steering lack feel, unattractive interior.
Technically clever, but the mpg figures barely seem worth the bother.

Like the Prius the Civic is a roomy car, front and rear, although the Honda's boot isn't very big: 350 litres, versus the Prius's 408, or a Volvo S40's 404 litres.
The basic ES version has climate control, but the EX version plugs a few glaring gaps and makes the Civic look like better value than the Prius. It comes with leather upholstery, hands-free Bluetooth phone operation and voice-activated satellite navigation - which takes up the space occupied by a six-CD autochanger in the ES.
