Honda Civic (2001-2005) Review

Category: Small Family 3.5 out of 5

Summary of the Honda Civic (2001-2005)

Price Range: £14,530 to £19,990

Assets

Excellent engines, economy, fun handling, low running costs, reliability, spaciousness.

Drawbacks

Firm ride, engine noise, plain-looking 5dr, somewhat bland interior.

Verdict

One of the most sensible cars if you're seeking practicality and efficiency. Not the most comfortable though, nor the most fun.

Honda Civic Review

Overview3.5 out of 5

Hard to believe that, back in the 1970s, the Civic was actually a supermini, because today this seventh-generation model looks more like a people-carrier that has shrunk in the wash.

But people increasingly want space in this sector, for ever-expanding families and associated paraphernalia, and the Honda is well-equipped for this. No need for a 'C-MAX' or 'Plus' version of the Civic, it's already extremely roomy. It also has a flat 'walk-through' floor inside, thanks to the relocation of the gearlever to the dashboard, just like on an MPV. It's not as distinctive as a Focus, or as classy as a Golf, but in terms of pure space utilisation, the Civic is one of the best out there.

Engines include 1.4-litre, 1.6-litre and a couple of 2.0-litre petrol units: normal, and manic 197bhp Type-R (see separate review). All petrol engines feature VTEC variable valve timing and all are very good indeed; that Type-R is truly magical. There's also a 1.7-litre diesel, developed in association with Isuzu, and, for the eco-aware, the hybrid petrol-electric Civic IMA (see separate feature for more on this). Available as a three or five-door hatch, or four-door saloon (IMA).
