Assets

Great to drive, good quality, economical.

A little clattery at start-up, car feels slightly nose-heavy on the road.

Verdict

A fine long-distance cruiser, this flagship diesel Mondeo compares favourably with the premium German competitors.

Ford Mondeo Estate Review

Comfort and Equipment5 out of 5

The Ford Mondeo is larger than before, especially width-wise: it's now a similar size to the old Scorpio, and so a very roomy car indeed. There's plenty of rear legroom, space for adults to stretch out in the back, and loads of luggage space.

Although the estate may look less practical than before - its sloped rear pillar, wraparound glass and fake spoiler effect giving the impression of a raked rear screen - there's actually even more load bay capacity than in the exceedingly spacious previous model: 1,745 litres with the rear seats folded - which isn't as much as a Mercedes-Benz E-Class, but more than a 5-Series Touring. These seats fold completely flat, with their bases tumbling forwards, and there's no need to remove or adjust the headrests.

All the seats are well shaped and supportive (and multi-adjustable in higher-spec versions), and low-set compared to those of the S-Max and Galaxy, giving plenty of headroom as well as a less van-like feel.

As this engine variant is only offered in Titanium X and Titanium X Sport trim levels, there's bags of kit onboard as standard. This includes a Sony in-dash six-CD player and Bluetooth; rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlights; park assist; leather and Alcantara seats; body-coloured side skirts, 18" alloys and twin chromed exhaust pipes on the outside.
