Great drive, good quality, value for money, lots of luggage space.
Auto's low-speed clunkiness, poor fuel economy and emissions.
What the Estate lacks in cleverness it makes up for in space.

This is a cheap car to run. Insurance groupings are lower than ever because of low accident repair costs.
Ford reckons this Mondeo will hold its value better than before, especially in diesel estate form. Ford's main dealer servicing and maintenance costs are lower than average, though most jobs can be carried out by independent garages. Fuel consumption and carbon dioxide outputs are 3-10 per cent better than their equivalents from the outgoing range: the 2.5-litre turbo returns a respectable 30.4mpg and the 2.0 TDCi 47.9mpg.
The Mondeo turbodiesel automatic fares less well than the range of Mondeo Estates averaging 39.8mpg with carbon dioxide emissions of 189g/km. That means it slots into Band F for VED road tax. A Volkswagen Passat with a similar power output averages 41.5mpg and emits 180g/km of carbon dioxide helping it fall into the cheaper Band E for VED.
