Ford's Galaxy has been the best-selling people-carrier in the UK since it was first introduced in 1995, outselling its Seat Alhambra and Volkswagen Sharan siblings (the Galaxy is a joint venture between Ford, Seat and Volkswagen) by a country mile. As time goes on though, competition for the Galaxy comes flooding in, notably from the Far East. But the biggest challenge of late has been the emergence of the same idea in a smaller package. The Renault Scenic, Mitsubishi Space Star, Vauxhall Zafira and Fiat Multipla all serve up similar ingredients at more affordable prices, making big people-carriers unnecessary for many. And that has caused their sales to drop.
So it isn't so surprising that Ford is pushing the Galaxy as a luxury family car, especially as it no longer offers a big saloon. And in some respects, the Galaxy is luxurious. After a facelift in 2000, it boasts new transmissions, more comfortable seats and an optional multi-media system. Engines are a 2.3 petrol, two diesels and a 2.8-litre V6.
