Category: Small Family
Price Range: £16,700 to £22,795
Excellent dynamics, good comfort, well-priced and equipped, good 2.0-litre engines, excellent NCAP crash test results
Not a lot, CVT gearbox/1.6 diesel engine combo isn't great
Stands up to scrutiny against any car in this class.

Very good. The old Focus gained a reputation for reliability, not always a Ford trait, and so far there's been no reason to think that this model is any different. Because so many Focuses are bought by fleets, servicing costs sit high on the priority list; so it's pretty affordable to repair, while parts will be keenly priced and readily available.
Insurance costs are competitive, and fuel consumption figures are around 43mpg for the 1.6-litre petrols with manual gearboxes, and 40mpg for the 2.0-litre petrol, though we'd be a bit surprised if you matched these in real-world driving. Consumption for the diesels is quoted at a respectable 59mpg for the 1.6 diesel, and 51mpg for the 2.0-litre diesel. Again, owners probably won't match the official figures during normal driving.
