Category: Small Family
Price Range: £16,700 to £22,845
Excellent dynamics, good comfort, well-priced and equipped, good 2.0-litre engines, excellent NCAP crash test results
Not a lot, CVT gearbox/1.6 diesel engine combo isn't great
Stands up to scrutiny against any car in this class.

The Focus has achieved the full five stars for occupant protection in the Euro NCAP crash tests, with four for child protection (with Ford's approved child seats) and two for pedestrian protection. As standard, all Focuses come with twin front and side-airbags, with curtain airbags standard on LX and above.
ABS is fitted to the brakes, with electronic brake-force distribution to get maximum available stopping power from each wheel, and ESP electronic stability programme to help rein things in if you cross the boundaries of grip.
Other active safety features, though these are optional, include voice-recognition for some controls, Bluetooth integration and relatively affordable adaptive headlamps, which swivel to 'peer round' corners.
All cars come with remote central locking, deadlocks and an alarm system.
