Category: Compact MPV 4 out of 5

Summary of the Fiat Multipla (2000-)

Price Range: £14,555 to £18,335

Assets

Innovative six-seat layout, value, good 1.9-litre diesel, fun and easy to drive.

Drawbacks

Small boot, relatively weak 1.6-litre petrol unit, not quite as smooth as the best.

Verdict

You don't have to be daring anymore to buy one of these pleasing, good-value compact MPVs.

Fiat Multipla Review

Running Costs4 out of 5

Not bad. The JTD is best, for although it costs more initially, excellent fuel economy and better residuals than the 1.6 make it attractive to those who pay for their car's upkeep. Insurance groups are low for both, service intervals are lengthy, and depreciation is far better than the Fiat norm. As mentioned, the Multipla outperforms other Fiats on the used market, ironically due in no small part to its rarity. Those who want one really want one, and seem more prepared to pay higher prices than for, say, the equivalent Vauxhall Zafira. Meanwhile, small sales mean Fiat has bypassed the vagaries of the mass fleet market, further aiding depreciation.

Is it a good buy? Certainly, the diesel models in particular. Niggles aside, there are few major mechanical maladies, while galvanised body panels and tough powerplants mean it should stay operational for years. Long enough to get used to the styling? The Multipla is well equipped for its price and, like most models of this ilk, provides a lot of car for the money.
