3.2 V6, dynamic drive, equipment

A credible alternative to the Peugeot 607 and Renault Vel Satis, but not in the same league as the BMW 5-Series, Mercedes E-Class or Audi A6.

Review

Comfort and Equipment4 out of 5

If you're after a super-relaxing drive then the 166 probably isn't for you: the steering tugs and the ride is fussy on anything other than a smooth road. The two-way adjustable steering column and powered seats (on the V6 models) mean you can tailor a driving position that is not excessively Italianate (long arms, short legs) and you get air-con across the range, plus cruise control on the 3.0-litre. The 166 is as well packaged as its executive contemporaries and has more headroom than the rakish shape suggests. Oddments space is a little mean and the deep, well-shaped boot is not supplemented by split/folding rear seats. The unique-fit stereo is beautifully incorporated into what must be the most imaginative and classy dashboard in the class.

Equipment levels were high; Turismo models had kit including 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic wipers, bi-xenon discharge headlights, automatic climate control, electric windows and mirrors, leather steering wheel and electronic seatback adjustment. Lusso spec added full leather upholstery (in black, grey or beige), a six-CD autochanger, cruise control, bigger 17-inch alloy wheels and fully electric front seats, and further options included lowered suspension with 18-inch alloys and sports seats, sat nav and a 10-speaker hi-fi. That lowered suspension, however, ruined the ride further.
