Summary of the Alfa Romeo 166 (2004-2006)

Price Range: No data available

Assets

3.2 V6, dynamic drive, equipment

Drawbacks

No diesel, depreciation, maligned dealer network

Verdict

A credible alternative to the Peugeot 607 and Renault Vel Satis, but not in the same league as the BMW 5-Series, Mercedes E-Class or Audi A6.

Review

Safety and Security3.5 out of 5

There are no EuroNCAP crash test results for the 166, but with six airbags (front, side and window) as standard, the level of protection is generous. A plethora of active safety is standard across the range including Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) which monitors the grip of all wheels and the yaw (body roll) of the car. If it senses the back end sliding it will cut the power to the affected wheel(s). ABS anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) to limit wheelspin and Motor Slip Regulation (MSR) to manage engine braking are also part and parcel. ASR can be switched off when driving on snow or ice to aid traction. An alarm and immobiliser with remote central locking is fitted across the range.
