Alfa Romeo 166 (2004-2006) Review

Category: Executive 3 out of 5

Summary of the Alfa Romeo 166 (2004-2006)

Price Range: No data available

Assets

3.2 V6, dynamic drive, equipment

Drawbacks

No diesel, depreciation, maligned dealer network

Verdict

A credible alternative to the Peugeot 607 and Renault Vel Satis, but not in the same league as the BMW 5-Series, Mercedes E-Class or Audi A6.

Review

Overview3 out of 5

Originally launched in 1999, Alfa Romeo's executive 166 saloon was revised for 2004. Not just a mild cosmetic tweak, the results of that €60m investment included new styling by Alfa Romeo Centro Stile, a bigger front grille and different, more handsome lights, chassis and cabin revisions.

The engine line-up was also revised with the addition of the 240bhp 3.2-litre V6 (as found in the GT, GTV and Spider). The 2.5-litre V6 was dropped and the 3.0 V6 was now only available with a four-speed automatic 'box. The 2.0-litre Twin Spark engine completed the range, and all versions gained more equipment.
