Review

On the road4.5 out of 5

At last you can get comfortable in a big Alfa saloon, as unlike its forerunners, the 166 has a normal seat/wheel/pedal relationship. You can see out well enough, but that high tail might make parking a little awkward. There may be smoother, quieter, more cosseting luxury cars than the 166 but there aren't many that are more enjoyable to drive quickly. It grips hard and has sharp responses - perhaps too sharp for buyers in this class?

All models have an urgent, eager feel, and the manual 3.0-litre is one of the strongest-performing and nicest-sounding executive saloons around.
