Big boot, safety kit, no-nonsense styling.
Heavy, thirsty and disappointing to drive.
The big Volvo grows yet again, but ultimately falls short.

The V70 is let down by its relatively poor economy and emissions from all engines, with the six-cylinder petrols unsurprisingly being the worst performers. The most frugal engines before the four-cylinder engines arrive are the diesels, both returning 43.5mpg on the combined cycle with CO2 emissions of 172g/km.
However, the V70 is generally a few thousand pounds cheaper than similarly specced German rivals and its residual values are extremely good, making it a good long-term prospect.
Servicing costs have been reduced over the previous model and insurance groupings are expected to be competitive.
