Big boot, safety kit, no-nonsense styling.
Heavy, thirsty and disappointing to drive.
The big Volvo grows yet again, but ultimately falls short.

Volvo estates are some of the most dependable cars around - many 850s still command a premium today even with sky-high mileage figures and, if looked after, tend to prove reliable on a day-to-day basis. There's no reason to suspect that the latest V70 shouldn't continue this trend, as it's based on mechanicals that have proved their worth in the S80.
Interior quality is good, if a little short of the mark compared to its high-end Germanic rivals, but the V70 generally costs less than the competition and the Volvo's interior should cope well with the rigours of family life.
