Chevrolet Corvette (1998-2001) Review

Category: Convertibles 3.5 out of 5

Summary of the Chevrolet Corvette (1998-2001)

Price Range: No data available

Assets

Goes like a Porsche 911, costs half as much. Handles well on smooth roads.

Drawbacks

Left-hand drive only. Very wide for British roads.

Verdict

A little crude, a little eccentric in Europe, but certainly exciting.

Review

On the road4 out of 5

The manual transmission is hard labour and not especially rewarding when you get it right, but the optional auto takes the edge off the performance. For a supercar, it's relatively easy to see out of, and the driving position adjusts to every need. But you're sitting on the wrong side of the car, and in something this wide that's a big drawback. On an open road, the Corvette goes and grips very hard indeed. But it doesn't quite have the decorum of the best European and Japanese sports cars, and on a bumpy British backroad it gets knocked off course so badly it slows you down. Besides, it's very wide for our country lanes.

Large 4.0 V8 engine has a great heritage but was actually pretty well all-new to this generation of Corvette. It delivers massive thrust, especially low down the rev range: 0-60mph comes up in 5.3 seconds, and top speed is 170mph-plus. Standard models developed 345bhp, Z06 versions 385bhp, and either way, it sounds like an American NASCAR racer, which can only be a good thing. There are six gears on the manual, but top is overdrive-style for cruising.
