Beautiful styling, sophisticated manners and tuneful engines.
Looks and feels dated now. Suffers from scuttle shake on bumpy roads, small boot, chassis struggles to deliver V6 grunt.
Bigger and less aggressive than some rival roadsters but still desirable.

Steering, clutch and gearchange are all light and, with tenacious front wheel drive handling, the 2.0 Spider is an easy car to drive quickly. The V6 is a bit less so, because the extra power means there's some torque steer under power. The hood stows flat under a steel panel so as not to impede your rear vision and there is remarkably little buffeting at speed. Although front wheel drive might suggest hatchback type handling the Spider's sharp steering, abundant traction and tenacious grip make it a good car to drive on a twisty road. The V6's wonderful engine note more than makes up for its tendency to get a little wayward when pressing on.
We used to have to make do with the 2.0-litre four-cylinder Alfa, but since 2001 the car has also come with the sonorous V6. Even the 2.0-litre is smooth, flexible and strong performing, but the V6 is seriously quick. Both sound the part - the V6 particularly glorious.
