Novel concept, unquestionably fashionable, easy to park, fabulous interior design, economical, reasonable starting price.
Poor performance, absence of rear seats, limited dealer network, harsh ride, expensive higher-spec models.
A great concept, becoming truly accepted, but still a flawed reality. Saved from obscurity more by its status as fashion icon and cult car than as a finished product.

Pretty good. The Smart returns 57.6mpg, which is very frugal, and because it has been engineered by DaimlerChrysler, it shouldn't need too much repairing. It has a three-year or 25,000-mile warranty, which implies that Smart (the company)isn't expecting owners to cover that many miles per annum. There's an approved insurance policy, and Smart has also negotiated cheap ferry crossings and car washes to reflect the lesser impact of the car on its environment. Because Smarts haven't been available for all that long, and because they clearly don't suit everyone, it's difficult to be either upbeat or downcast. Our advice: make sure you want a Smart and can live with its shortcomings, and then ask if it's worth the compromise over a more conventional supermini or city car. DaimlerChrysler has lowered the price of the Smart since it was first launched, but the advent of right-hand-drive models put raised it again, so that the range is now not as competitively priced.
