Smart City (2000-2003) Review

Category: Convertibles 3 out of 5

Summary of the Smart City (2000-2003)

Price Range: No data available

Assets

Novel concept, unquestionably fashionable, easy to park, fabulous interior design, economical, reasonable starting price.

Drawbacks

Poor performance, absence of rear seats, limited dealer network, harsh ride, expensive higher-spec models.

Verdict

A great concept, becoming truly accepted, but still a flawed reality. Saved from obscurity more by its status as fashion icon and cult car than as a finished product.

Review

Reliability and Quality4 out of 5

No troubles so far with the Smart's quality or reliability, but then it's quite a new product, so you wouldn't expect too many grumbles about longevity. Early on, there were doubts over its stability - as with the Mercedes-Benz A-Class before it - but it's on such skinny front tyres as standard that this really won't be a problem. The feel of the interior isn't too bad: it's a little plasticky in places, but the fabric element lifts the mood quite gaily.
