Citroen Xsara Picasso (2000-) Review

Category: Compact MPV 3.5 out of 5

Summary of the Citroen Xsara Picasso (2000-)

Price Range: £14,395 to £17,895

Assets

Cheap, and getting cheaper, HDI diesels, well-equipped.

Drawbacks

Slightly unrefined chassis, getting dated now, C4 Picasso's not that much dearer.

Verdict

It's comfortable, it's spacious, it's practical and it's cheap.

Citroen Xsara Picasso Review

On the road3.5 out of 5

The sloping front pillars might look stylish, but they do obscure forward vision; the view out the back isn't that clear, either. The driving position is commanding, and the feel is definitely more MPV than traditional hatchback, due to the slope of the windscreen, which helps the cabin seem so spacious. Unfortunately, this also means that the Picasso can feel larger to manoeuvre than it actually is (a drawback shared with the Scenic), though it's light to steer and quick to respond. The dash-mounted gearbox is easy to use, and the brakes are firm and sharp; the digitally-displayed instrumentation is clear, and visible from all seats, but there's no rev counter. Satellite navigation is available as an option. The Picasso is certainly powerful and competent enough for most drivers' desires, but it's no enthusiast's sportster and it lacks enough grip and poise to inspire confidence to really push it on. If provoked, it tends towards understeer and loses composure. The diesel deserves four stars, as it's the most satisfying accelerator, and due to the heavier engine, it feels altogether better balanced.

The entry-level 1.6i engine is adequate, but struggles with a full load on board; the 1.8i 16-valve is better on the motorway but otherwise offers little advantage. Neither petrol engine is particularly gutsy to accelerate, and both have to be worked hard on steep, twisty roads. The pick of the bunch has to be the superb 1.6 HDI 110 diesel - worth five stars, it's got loads of torque (pulling power) and feels sportier than the others, even the 2.0 16v petrol. It's also quiet, smooth and refined, yet more economical than the old 2.0 HDI 90.
