Retro style, spacious practical interior, decent specification, Mercedes diesel engine
Raucous, thirsty engines, unsettled and noisy ride, sluggish auto 'box, boot not that large, petrol's high fuel consumption, feels very dated now
A style statement that's also reasonably practical; a long way off the class-leaders in terms of performance, handling, comfort and versatility, but a unique and likeable proposition nonetheless

The PT Cruiser has gone through the EuroNCAP crash tests, scoring a poor three-star rating - below class average these days. It didn't protect very well in frontal offset impacts despite the standard fitment of driver and passenger airbags, though its side impact score was better; side airbags are standard but head-protecting curtain airbags are not available. All the seats offer three-point seatbelts with pre-tensioners and height-adjustable head restraints, and for 2005, ABS anti-lock brakes and low-speed traction control are now standard. Security-wise, there is a Thatcham-certified alarm and immobilizer as standard, and you cannot start the ignition (in manual versions) unless the clutch is held to the floor.
