Chevrolet Captiva (2007-) Review

Category: Small 4x4s 2 out of 5

Summary of the Chevrolet Captiva (2007-)

Price Range: £17,815 to £25,455

Assets

Good value for money, large and reasonably roomy, well-equipped; doesn't pretend to be a proper off-roader.

Drawbacks

Bouncy, wallowy ride; less-than-sharp handling; gutless petrol engine.

Verdict

Cheap and cheerful, but has no unique selling point, nor any reason to choose it over its similarly cut-price Korean rivals. Feels dated already.

Chevrolet Captiva Review

Running Costs2 out of 5

The 2.4 petrol returns a manageable 37.1mpg but emits 217g/km of carbon dioxide, meaning high Band F tax. The manual diesel also does 31.7mpg, and a lower 197g/km, but it's still in the same tax band. With the auto gearbox, it does 32.8mpg, yet puts out 233g/km, positioning it in the £300-a-year Band G along with the Range Rovers, Cayennes and suchlike. Band G cars may also be liable for increased parking permit and congestion charge payments in the future, too, if certain local councils get their way - so a cheap Chevy could turn out to be a rather expensive car to run.
