Category: Roadsters 4 out of 5

Summary of the Caterham 7 (1973-)

Price Range: £15,995 to £42,595

Assets

Breathtaking driving experience, one of few cars that's good on both road and race-track, quality, history, design, lightness, performance

Drawbacks

The ride's a bit shabby, comfort is poor, cramped cabin

Verdict

If you're tempted by the pros, the cons won't matter; if you're put off by the cons, the pros won't - we're in the first of those camps

Caterham 7 Review

Comfort and Equipment1 out of 5

This is the Caterham's weakest point but, comfort is hardly the car's ethos, so we haven't considered this too much in the overall rating. Standard Sevens are cramped, with driver and passenger sitting close together, and a small footwell. You can get a wider version though, called the SV, which addresses quite a few shortcomings yet still looks - and mostly feels - like a proper Seven. But when features like 'paint' appear on the options list you know you're not getting luxurious transport. Other luxuries, like full weather gear (a roof and side-screens), a heater, and heated windscreen can also be found on the options list of some models, rather than being standard. You can't specify a stereo, power steering or anything like that, so don't bother looking. And although the ride isn't great, and it's noisy, and often cold, and windy, the driving position is actually pretty comfortable, and you'll be having too much of a ball to care about the rest.
