Conversation-piece looks, great engines, fine finish, solid feel, road-holding, well-engineered roadster hood, monstrous Z4 M
Looks aren't to everyone's liking, limited stowage space, hard ride in some versions
Intriguing-looking sports car that's a massive step up from the Z3, but keen drivers will still prefer the Porsche Boxster or Cayman.

BMW's factory in Spartanburg, North Carolina, generally turns out vehicles these days that are a match for German-made BMWs, the Z4 looking much better-built than the Z3. The early Z4s had the odd squeak and rattle, and there were some reports of ECU problems and high oil consumption, but nothing really alarming. Some owners report very high tyre wear, but this is inevitable in a high-performance rear-wheel drive sports car...
The Z4 shares many components with the 3-Series and the engines are familiar from elsewhere in the BMW range, so it's unlikely to spring any nasty surprises.
Inside, too, all is solid and sumptuous, with the roadster's hood also fitting snugly. There are few squeaks, rattles or shakes, but the ultra-rigid Z4 M coupe's fascia can creak a bit when it's driven hard.
