Admirable road-holding abilities, high-driving position, sporty styling.
Poor rearward visibility, cramped in the back, expensive to run, only four seats.
The X6 looks like a compromise - and it is. Despite delivering in terms of driveability and desirability, it's not a hugely practical car.

It's expensive to tax, but it's not horrendous on fuel. BMW's Efficient Dynamics - complete with stop/start engines that cut off in traffic - have conspired to make the X6 cleaner and more frugal than rivals.
BMW says that although the X6 is faster than the Porsche Cayenne, the Mercedes M-Class and the Range Rover Sport, it is actually cleaner. The bald statistics tell you the X6 is no tree-hugger, though: the 30d and 35d are the best options if you have a guilty conscience, both falling outside the highest-paying band for VED, emitting 217g/km and 220g/km of CO2, respectively. They are reasonably frugal, the 30d returning 34.4mpg and the 35d giving 34mpg. With the figures for the two diesel models being so close, but with the 35d having an extra 51bhp for only another £2K, it rather begs the question who will opt for the entry-level model.
The petrol models aren't so kind though: the 35i emits 262g/km and the xDrive 50i 299g/km. They are pretty gluttonous too: the 35i will deliver 25.9mpg and the 50i, 22.6mpg on average.
Don't expect cheap insurance bills either.
