BMW X5 (2007-) Review

Category: Sporting 4x4s 4 out of 5

Summary of the BMW X5 (2007-)

Price Range: £40,820 to £54,155

Assets

Class-leading blend of performance and economy, excellent ride quality, refinement.

Drawbacks

Quite expensive, optional third-row seats for children only, less fun to drive than the original.

Verdict

A thoughtful and effective replacement, but some of the charm has gone.

BMW X5 Review

Running Costs3.5 out of 5

The diesel's CO2 emissions are low enough to make it a clear choice ahead of petrol-powered equivalents.

There's no escaping that a 530d SE Touring is not only more than a third of a tonne lighter, it will return over 40mpg on the combined cycle instead of 32.5mpg, emits 187 grammes of CO2 for every kilometre travelled instead of 231 and has nearly as much room in both its back and its boot. It's also wildly quicker and nearly £4500 cheaper.

That said, the 3.0d is made to look very good by the 4.8i, which returns 22.6mpg and pumps out 299g/km of CO2.

All X5s are expensive to insure: group 19 for the V8, group 17 for the rest.
