A technological showpiece, huge and refined performance, amazing mix of comfort and agility, quality feel, groundbreaking design.
Some of the technology isn't standard, styling is very controversial, steering-wheel gearchange buttons badly placed.
BMW wanted to make a bold new statement, and has succeeded. No other luxury car does so much so well. But if the styling's still a bit much, the new-generation model - with the wilder edges smoothed off - went on sale in April 2005.

Most cars in this class suffer savage depreciation and it's the big-engined, fully-kitted cars that take the biggest hit. The diesels are in strongest demand on the used market, and long-wheelbase Li models are popular amongst private-hire chauffeur-drivers who are beginning to come around to this car's less-than-subtle looks. Despite the depreciation, the Seven can still be expensive with the right options (adaptive dampers and Dynamic Drive are liked, as is the TV/DVD set-up) but it's good value considering the original new price.
