Fantastically good to drive, fuel efficient, distinctive looks, five-star NCAP crash test score
Rear-drive layout means less space inside, more expensive than class rivals
In a class that tends toward the worthy and dull, here is a feelgood car with a real difference

The 1-Series feels solid and well put-together, and the 2007 refresh of the interior brought higher-quality materials to the cabin. Some reliability problems have been reported, however, including ECU failure, power steering fluid leaks and steering rack problems, and failed fuel injectors and turbo (diesel engines, recalled for the injector fault). Most of these glitches should have been sorted now.
