Power and smoothness of the 2.7-litre petrol engine, Tiptronic gearbox, rugged styling, combination of off-road prowess and on-road ability, good value compared with standard A6 Avant
Diesel's lack of low-speed torque, exposed sills transfer dirt onto exiting legs, beautifully-finished interior inappropriate for regular dirt-road use, easily scuffed bumpers and alloys
It looks great and delivers the goods - what more could you want? Well, it's a bit too smart to be a proper working vehicle

The standard A6 range seems to be pretty bombproof, and the Allroad should be too, though a number of problems with the air suspension have been reported by owners. All its mechanicals are otherwise well-proven, and it is beautifully finished right down to the tiniest details. Bear in mind though that its unprotected bumpers and alloys are vulnerable, particularly if it does go off-road and into the rough stuff, and the glossy interior won't look too good plastered in mud, grime and bits of the great outdoors.
