Subtle style, excellent build quality, good diesel range, large choice of engines/transmissions.
Still not an involving drive for the sporty-minded, some find the styling plain.
An excellent all-rounder for those that want to relax on the road.

At launch, Audi called its minimalist-looking A6 the 'Silent Executive'. This may summon up images of boardroom skullduggery and memos at dawn, but the nickname was meant to reflect the advances in noise-proofing and refinement made to these models, which were revamped and restyled.
The 2001 A6 also gained two new petrol engines, uprated diesels and the six-speed CVT transmission system called Multitronic, an option alongside the continuing five-speed Tiptronic auto. We said at the time, 'the low-key choice in the image-obsessed executive class, the A6 is a quality car that just got better' and noted that 'while the somewhat detached A6 still isn't the most involving of drives, it's an excellent all-rounder that's difficult to really fault.' Same goes for it second-hand now.
