Audi A4 Review

On the road3 out of 5

Steering, gearbox and pedals are notably light and easy to control, giving the A4 a very relaxing, hassle-free air on the move. It's a delight to swing around town, where the good visibility and perfect ergonomics come into play, yet is also stable and smooth on faster roads. Quattro models feel particularly 'glued' to the Tarmac, and are unbeatable in poor weather conditions or high winds. The miles roll by almost without you noticing. Handling inspires confidence, with a flat, secure approach to corners and a sensation of flowing fluidly through them. Quattro models naturally have loads of grip on all surfaces, but no A4 ever feels skittish, while the steering is also impressively direct and sharp. Many of the engines may be a little gruff when extended, but they can't detract from the car's impressive chassis, even though ultimately, the BMW 3 Series is that bit better.

The engine range is extensive - 1.6, 1.8T and 2.0 four-cylinder, 2.4 and 3.0 V6, 1.9 TDI and 2.5 V6 TDI - and it's only really the 1.6 that may disappoint. It's no rocketship, and has a gruff nature which is surprising in such a classy package. The 1.9 TDIs are also a bit noisy when accelerating, but reward with staggering pull, and, like all units, offer good refinement at speed. The new 2.0 FSI is a large improvement over its gutless 2.0 predecessor, 1.8T units are smooth and decently rapid, and V6s are quicker still but a little characterless; the V6 TDI is often the preferable choice, as it can feel quicker if you're lazy with the gears, yet rarely sounds like a diesel. As for gearboxes, the manual is crisp and pleasant to use, the auto is slick and the Multitronic CVT is one of the most impressive units of its type; auto shifts and smoothness, with manual-car fuel efficiency.
