Good seating position and well sited controls make for an easy drive, as does fair visibility. The controls are fairly light, though doors are irritatingly heavy to open. Even in 2.8 quattro guise, the A4 is not hugely entertaining for the keen driver - its responses aren't lively enough. Instead, there's pleasure to be had from the high quality manner in which it functions and performs, whichever model you buy.
The base 1.6 is not too brisk, but the 1.8T turbo is strong. The super-sweet 2.4 and 2.8 Vs are very quick, and sound delightfully smooth.
