The A4 range has recently been crash-tested under the new stricter Euro NCAP crash tests. Under the more stringent testing, the Audi scored the maximum 5 stars for overall protection.
The A4 Allroad's ESP has been re-engineered for off-road conditions, and when venturing onto dirt you're advised to press the 'ESP off' button. Drive forward and sensors detect off-road conditions that adapt the system to dirt. On gravel and loose surfaces the ESP lessens the ABS effect, allowing the wheels to lock and act like a plough; the result is that you build up dirt underneath the tyres and that reduces stopping distances.
