Alfa Romeo Brera Review

Overview3 out of 5

The marketing director at Alfa Romeo UK, Nicholas Bernard said the Alfa Brera S 'isn't about brute force' - which is a relief, because that's not what we were looking for.

History tells us that when you buy an Alfa, you buy into beauty and style. You'll be prepared to compromise a bit on driving dynamics and, you know, you might need to tolerate the odd glitch here and there. It's all part of the Alfa charm.

However, the standard Brera has been too compromised on driving dynamics: the ride's jittery and the handling's loose, too loose for us Brits, anyway.

In a bid to placate the British driver who wants a bit more composure from his coupe, the Italians enlisted the help of Prodrive - a world leader in motorsport - to spruce up the driving experience offered by the Brera. It wants it to compete with, and beat, the competition.

After a year of suspension and chassis development at Prodrive, the Brera S is unleashed with a choice of two petrol existing direct petrol engines - the 182bhp, 2.2-litre JTS and the 256bhp 3.2-litre V6 JTS.

But this is not just another 'variant' Alfa says: the S is 'distinctly different' from the rest of the Brera line-up and changes have been made both inside and out. To ensure exclusivity, production of the S will be limited to just 500 individually numbered models and prices range from £24,950 to £28,450.
