Nissan Skyline 300GT (2002-) Review

Category: Affordable Sports 4 out of 5

Summary of the Nissan Skyline 300GT (2002-)

Price Range: No data available

Assets

Smooth BMW style, cultured V6, rear-drive multi-link chassis, classy airy cabin, good equipment list, speed, comfort, failsafe handling.

Drawbacks

Is it really a Skyline? Lacks sporting edge and character of Skylines past, softish throttle and auto gearbox responses, some cheapo switchgear.

Verdict

If it really wants a UK image-booster, Nissan should forget the Maxima QX and bring this puppy in.

Review

Overview4 out of 5

Smooth, urbane and every inch the modern, cool, uppercrust sports saloon, the Nissan Skyline 300GT has got Japan all abuzz. Why? Because Nissan has taken one of the most emotive names in Japanese motordom and totally re-invented the machine behind it. For more than 30 years, the Skyline has been one of Japan's best-kept secrets: a six-cylinder sports saloon (and coupe), strong on performance, handling, image and race wins and worshipped accordingly. Especially so in the case of the legendary Skyline GT-R, the thundering 2.6-litre, twin-turbo, 4wd supercoupe, star of road, track and Sony Playstation...

But with this new Skyline, Nissan has created a whole different breed. For a start, it's the first Skyline ever to be offered seriously outside Japan (it goes to the US as an Infiniti in 2002, although shipments to Europe are still TBC). Codenamed V35, the new Skyline trades visual and dynamic aggression for a more cultured package while debuting a new sports rear-drive platform that'll also be used for the new Z car. The Skyline's classic straight-six engine is also consigned to history, replaced by two new high-tech, 2.5-litre (212 bhp) and 3.0-litre (256 bhp) V6s. Aluminium multi-link suspension and a classy cabin also join the party.
