Abarth Grande Punto (2008-) Review

Category: Hot Hatchbacks 4 out of 5

Summary of the Abarth Grande Punto (2008-)

Price Range: No data available

Assets

Great-looking hot hatch properly designed for a good time, grippy, rapid and involving. Great heritage too. Esseesse kit makes it riotously entertaining.

Drawbacks

Questionable ride quality shown up on UK roads, steering a little vague.

Verdict

A proper hot hatch, especially in wonderfully non-PC Esseesse form, and great value.

Insurance groups have yet to be decided, but the Punto safety score and the standard-fit ESP should help keep the groupings quite low, as - in the case of the Esseesse - will the fact that the kits have to be fitted by an official agent and are properly developed, tested and certified.

The official fuel consumption figure for the combined cycle is 40.9mpg, but in the hands of drivers (especially younger ones) keen to exploit its sporting qualities on B-roads, this is likely to be a distant memory. On our test, the base Abarth Grande Punto used five-eighths of its tank over just 120miles.

Carbon dioxide emissions are given at 162g/km for the base model.
