Having owned a MK5 GTi just over a year and now own a R32, I feel I can offer a balanced opinion of the two cars. The R32 is heavier and for the same steering input it under steers, but once you change your driving style slightly it soon becomes normal. The weight works in its favour; it actually feels better the faster you drive over the rough stuff, and it give lots of confidence at speed. Performance wise, it feels very quick with a big wad of torque instantly with the slightest depression on the throttle pedal. The gorgeous exhaust note is intoxicating. Visually it's a bit understated and the inside is a little bit dull. It should feel a bit more special to let you know you're in a top of the range Golf. Overall, the two cars are similar in many ways; the GTi is better on city streets, but on anything else the R32 is just so good, and puts a smile on my face every time I drive it.
Too many problems on delivery meant many visits to the (awful) dealer. Now sorted though electric mirrors still flaky, and no cure available. 9 months and 13000 miles on (and still no service indicator), it is losening up nicely. There is flashier, faster metal for less money available, but for a high mileage user the GTI has refinement on it's side. Great all rounder - marvellous handling and DSG best auto on the market. High price, but has a class and discretion it's competition cannot match.
Brilliant - well built inside and outside
