I took a Y-reg 1.6 manual petrol hatch for a test drive and after my little Fiesta it felt like driving a tank but it did feel safe and solid and handled well. I liked the acceleration and steering but wasn't too impressed with the cockpit. Overall I am still interested in buying an Astra to replace my Fiesta.
It's like driving around a freshly cleaned sardine can. You know it has a purpose but can't quite see why it still exists.
The second-car market is a funny one. You've driven enough to try something bigger than a Corsa - now you're ready for a car that's more practical for long trips or carting stuff - only still cheap. Step forward the Astra - sheer numbers and reliability mean they can be found at bargain prices, while the handling, interior space and running costs are near class-leading. Best though is the engine - from the inside you won't even know it's diesel, yet it'll return 65mpg and torque to leave a grin.
This car is an absolute dream to drive. With its sport switch for a more responsive drive, it is an enjoyable experience to drive. Very comfortable and handles superbly.
The title Vauxhall Astra has always suggested boring, middle of the road and basic; but I am more than pleased to say that things have definitely come along leaps and bounds. I never thought that I would be saying this, but the new Astra is actually sporty and stylish; it's a completely different breed compared to the old Astra. The firm suspension and positive steering give a sporty yet comfy ride and the responsive engine feels far from a diesel. This one definitely gets my thumbs up.
