As a package the Grand Punto has lots going for it: sharp looks, roomy, well equipped and good value. Drives nicely but 8V 1.4 petrol is a bit gutless - it has to be revved (in traditional small Fiat style) to make even modest progress. That kind of driving style hits economy. Interior a bit cheap feeling, but to be expected at this price. Voice-controlled bluetooth phone and mp3 connection a nice standard feature. Get a nearly new one from a car supermarket as I did and there's little to touch it for the money.
One of the most underrated cars on sale. Fantastic silky-smooth engine, brilliant ride/handling compromise, pulls like a train yet returns over 40mpg. Lovely cosseting cabin with all the toys. Don't like the looks? Try a dark, dechromed Sport with mesh grill and upgraded alloys and it's still a head turner. And with the advent of the XF next year - which will be mechanically very similar - the dealers are falling over themselves to give big discounts. Sorted (just like the car).
Had a free rental upgrade to this car during a recent trip to Ireland. Initial excitement soon turned to disappointment. Car looks nice and goes alright, but constant obtrusive bus-like soundtrack and general cheap ambience a real let down. Unlike the turbine smooth S-Type diesel, no meaningful attempt seems to have been made to dampen the engine noise and vibration.
