The Megane Sport Saloon sits on the same extended wheelbase as the Sport Tourer. Renault says that the Saloon was designed as a stand alone model from the outset, and that as a result, it looks less like a hatch with an after-thought boot tacked on the end. (which fairly accurately describes the last Megane saloon). To be fair, the new Megane Saloon is a handsome creature with a neatly integrated tail end.

To increase luggage space, the Saloon's rear overhang has been extended by a large 228mm compared with the hatchback Megane. To put the car's overall length in perspective, the Megane Saloon is 138mm longer than a Ford Focus Saloon and 28mm longer than a BMW 3-Series.

Renault is claiming class leading passenger comfort, too, pointing out that the rear seat backs are reclined to 27 degrees, an extra 2 degrees more recline than in other Meganes. To this rather arcane fact, Renault adds that the Saloon is available with roller blinds for the two rear windows, as well as the rear screen, thus confirming the car's upmarket aspirations.

Both the Sport Tourer and Sport Saloon are distinctively styled for what can be quite a bland segment, and both are well equipped and good value for money. Add to that Renault's growing reputation for class leading safety, and you've got two more good ones for the shopping list.
