| Progress is stately |
 |
With the Ram's body-on-frame chassis jerking around underneath you, progress is stately rather than steriodal. But every mile or so you just have to gun the engine. The Hemi gives the Ram phenomenal alacrity off the line and scores the rapid progress of this 2.4-tonne monster with a guttural, heartfelt V8 soundtrack. In fact the 345bhp Ram has more power, more soul and more aural thrill than its two rivals (also America's two best-selling vehicles), the Ford F-150 and the Chevrolet Silverado.

| It's actually 8.5mpg, which makes it OK, obviously. |
 |
But it is scarily thirsty. The ceiling-mounted trip is calibrated for smaller American gallons, so the figure you read in glaring Chrysler green is worse than it really is, but the 7.1mpg figure we saw over 10 miles of town driving is still only 8.5mpg.
At that rate, it's only 221 miles to your next £100 fill-up.
