Driving Impression: Seat Ibiza Cupra Diesel

243lb/ft of torque is on tap from just 1900rpm

Not-so-super Cupra
High-performance oil-burner
Good on price
Hang on for the petrol
The diesel has the higher torque output, however, delivering 243lb ft at 1900rpm compared to the 1.8 20VT's 180lb ft at a low-for-a-petrol 2000rpm, and this denotes more mid-range pulling power, more useful for everyday driving than out-and-out acceleration from a standstill. That said, there's not much to choose between the two when it comes to 0-60 times: 7.6 seconds for the diesel, 7.3 for the petrol. The diesel will win out every time, obviously, when it comes to fuel consumption, though - it returns 52.3mpg whilst the petrol manages a less impressive 35.8mpg. With purchase prices the same for both models - £15,500 - the diesel will certainly be the most cost-effective buy of the two.
