On paper, it's good if not electrifying. The GTI has 125bhp which allows it to hit 127mph and 0-62 mph in 8.3 seconds. But because the car is quite light - thanks to aluminium bits and pieces poached from its TDi sibling - it moves off the line with scalded-cat alacrity. And it earns extra points for being so zippy and deeply enjoyable.
