  • Road Test: Volkswagen Lupo GTI (2001-2005)
    Hot Hatchbacks

    VW Lupo 1.4S
    by Peter Levay

Bought new over a year ago as my wife's runabout, this car is still a real pleasure to drive, bringing a broad smile to your face. Many passers-by have asked to look inside and all have remarked on the extremely high standard of finish. Finished in black with optional alloys, ABS and front fogs/heated washer jets, it really looks quite sporty.

The manufacturer's 0-60 mph time of 12 seconds is very conservative - it's more like 10.5 seconds in reality. It has knocked the smile off a few people's faces as we've nipped past them.

With low insurance (group 3), average fuel consumption of 46 mpg and annual service costs of £120, it is cheap to run. Even our teenage children approve of it as a car suitable to be seen in. Praise indeed. Our son looks forward to learning to drive in it next year. Many driving schools have bought them, so he will have the same car to practise in. And yes, you can seat two teenagers in the back quite comfortably.

Well built, safe (NCAP crash test - 4 stars), economical and fully galvanised with a 12-year bodywork warranty, the Lupo makes an ideal second car. I have no doubt that in a couple of years my wife won't see much of it - our son will have purloined it as 'his' car.
