  • Road Test: Volkswagen Lupo GTI (2001-2005)
    Hot Hatchbacks by: Paul Gregory
    Volkswagen Lupo GTI (01- )
    RUNNING COSTS RATING:

Top residuals and a claimed 39.8 mpg are compelling. It's reliable and well warrantied, but you lose something on the insurance grouping - it's provisonally set at 11 - because of the extra performance and GTI badge. Its quality and lavish warranty will make this a great used buy, but don't expect to snap up a bargain. With such a deserved reputation as a good drive - and the VW stamp of integrity - residuals will remain high. It's a small car for the money, but the performance and fun you get out of it, plus the low cost of keeping it going and the likelihood of realising a good portion of the initial outlay when you want to flog it, make this a compelling buy. You'll get cheaper, with comparable performance, but not the quality. Equipment levels are pretty decent, too.
