  • Road Test: Volkswagen Lupo GTI (2001-2005)
    Hot Hatchbacks by: Paul Gregory
    Volkswagen Lupo GTI (01- )
    COMFORT AND EQUIPMENT RATING:

Although the suspension has been firmed up, it really does ride well in town. And despite its small dimensions, it has the feel of a larger car - in the front, anyway - because of the seats and the quality of the interior and controls. The wheel is lovely to grip, too. Fine for the two in front, but even kids wouldn't want to spend too long in the rear. The boot is correspondingly claustrophobic. Still, it's a GTI. You get quite a lot of standard kit in GTI trim, but will need a visit to the options list, where things start to get expensive. The basic single CD is reasonably priced, but tinny. Manual air-con is staggeringly nearly a grand and an electric sunroof nearly five-hundred. Sat-nav is not an option.
