All the petrol engines deliver healthy power outputs for their size, producing reasonably brisk performance even from the base 1.4, which scores 62 mph in 12.0 seconds and tops 115 mph. The best-seller is the 1.6, which achieves a slightly above average 10.2 seconds and 118 mph, while the T Sport motor pares the 62 mph sprint to 8.4 seconds and will touch 140 mph. The 1.6 is more than convincing for a family car, while the 89 bhp turbodiesel pulls with impressive strength once on the move, although it could hardly be called quick; the 114 bhp 2.0 D-4D is considerably faster, though it's still no sports car. The T Sport is electrifying once the engine is revving at 6000 rpm or more - there's a distinct surge in acceleration and a decidedly sporty soundtrack to go with it as it closes on the 7800 rpm limit. Below this lofty engine speed - which is where you'll mostly be, in reality - performance is a bit soft and harsh-sounding. To get the best of the T Sport, you really need to work the gearbox.
