  • Road Test: Toyota Corolla (2002-)
    Small Family
    Toyota Corolla (02- )
    RUNNING COSTS RATING:

Toyota has made major efforts here. Improved crash protection in low-speed impacts over the previous car, minimiseing damage to the car, means lower insurance groupings all round. The base 1.4 is in group 3E rather than the 4E that competitors such as the Focus and Golf belong in, for example. Servicing costs are reasonable too - Toyota reckons the 1.4 is the best in class on a cost-per-mile basis. Fuel consumption is very competitive, especially considering the slightly-above-average performance, but it's no leap forward - unsurprising, given the weight gains over the previous model. CO2 outputs are competitive too. Given Toyota's legendary reliability and the broader appeal of this new range, the Corolla is certain to make a better buy than ever. It's likely to hold its value more effectively too - good news if you're an owner, less good if you're trying to buy one second-hand. Owners of previous-generation Corollas might have been shocked at the price hike, but this car is substantially more modern and competent for the money. Standard equipment includes power steering, ABS anti-lock brakes with EBD, twin airbags and sidebags, electric front windows, remote central double-locking, a trip computer and outside temperature display. A step up from the entry model brings air-conditioning, electric mirrors and front foglamps, a colour-keyed side moulding and alloy wheels. Decor-wise, the door-mirror covers and bumpers are colour-keyed as standard but sadly, the attractive metalised cabin trim is fitted only on top-end models.
