| SAFETY AND SECURITY RATING: |
 |
No word on Euro NCAP crash test ratings as yet; we're not convinced it's going to achieve the full five stars but it should get a respectable four. Smart is keen to stress the so-called Tridion safety cell construction (that's the different-coloured framework around the cabin), though in truth, all modern small hatchbacks incorporate a similar structure for optimum rigidity and impact absorption, channelling forces into crumple zones away from the car's occupants. It's not quite as revolutionary as it looks, but it is a robust, modern design. Standard equipment will include front and side airbags, with optional curtain airbags, and seatbelt pre-tensioners on the front seats, with three rear three-point searbelts. Credit too to Smart for fitting ABS anti-lock brakes on all versions - this essential piece of safety kit should not be an extra-cost option. In the Forfour, ABS is combined with ESP (electronic stability programme), again as standard, and there are disc brakes on all wheels. ISOFIX child seat mounting points are optional, the front passenger airbag can be deactivated if a rear-facing baby seat is installed, and Smart offers its own range of child seats and booster cushions designed specifically to fit in this car.
